The main goal of your 1098 is to track your mortgage rates. A field on the form displays the sum of your monthly interest payments. Another indicates whether you have paid self-sufficient points or prepaid interest. If you have paid more than $600 in mortgage insurance premiums — you claim them as part of your mortgage interest write-off — you will see that amount in a separate box. Your lender can report property taxes paid using Box 5 of the form, but this is not mandatory.
